Building a Biodiesel Technology Company

5:32 pm in Uncategorized by Opal Ritter

In order to get his high school diploma in 2008, Daniel Gomez Iniguez was required to complete a research project. He had no intention of creating a multi-million dollar alternative energy company. At the time, Mexican newspapers were writing often about biodiesel, the alternative fuel produced from vegetable oils and animal fats. But there wasn’t a Mexican company that had technology to produce biodiesel. So Gomez, who planned to do his research in chemistry, became very interested in how he could make biodiesel himself.

“I started searching the Internet,” recalls Gomez. “It seemed real easy to make [biodiesel] at your home.” Gomez went to the local university, Tecnologico de Monterrey, and found a Ph.D. who taught the course on biodiesel production. He began attending the class (not for credit), and he joined an informal biodiesel club. “Instead of going mostly to high school, I started going mostly to the university,” Gomez recalls.

He learned enough to start making biodiesel from used cooking oil at restaurants, and compared it to making biodiesel from animal fats (the subject of his research project), to learn the process. He still didn’t plan to start a business. Spending time at the university as well as going to biodiesel conferences throughout Mexico, though, Gomez met other people who could make the project into something much bigger.

Gomez and his three partners—Guillermo Colunga, Antonio Lopez, and Mauricio Pareja, who each had expertise in a different area of biodiesel production—started a not-for-profit foundation in early 2009 to develop biodiesel production technology. And when it brought in more than $150,000 in sales from another university, in Tabasco, Mexico, in the first two months, they invested the money to start a for-profit business. Today, Solben—which is a made-up name that combines the Spanish words for “solutions” and “biodiesel”—sells technology for biodiesel production from non-food products like algae and Jatropha, a plant. (The company doesn’t want to promote competition with sugar or corn biodiesel—or interfere with food industry jobs.) Solben also offers products and services to help customers with the biodiesel production process, including oil plantation seeds, seed-hulling machines, training, and quality testing. The company’s government, private-company and university customers are in Mexico.

Solben’s sales were more than $1 million in 2010 and the partners predict $3 million in sales this year. It is expanding into Central America, the United States, and India. Gomez, who was runner-up last year for the Global Student Entrepreneur of the Year Award and won the Global Impact Award, is also on track to finish his undergraduate degree in chemical engineering from Tecnologico de Monterrey in 2012.

Drake Goes Home Alone In ‘Marvins Room’ Video

Drizzy gets rejected and drowns his sorrows in brand-new clip.

It’s one thing to hear Drake sing about lost love and rejection, but to see it is a different story entirely. In the video for “Marvins Room,” Drake tosses back drinks at a party full of women and goes home alone, while a drunk-dial conversation coupled with his regretful lyrics seem to explain why he failed to close the deal.

The clip, which was released at 3:46 a.m. on Drizzy’s October’s Very Own blog, starts off with a woman dressed in a T-shirt and panties on the phone, talking about her night, in which she hopped from club to club. “Hello, yeah I just walked in,” she says pacing her living room before lying down on a leather couch. Drake sits on the other end of the line, seated in the back of his Maybach, listening.

The beat drops and Drake starts his first verse seated at the bar in a lounge. Partygoers mingle and dance around him, but the Toronto native throws back shot after shot to chase the bottles of beer that he sips on. Clearly inebriated, Drizzy first flirts with a girl standing at the bar. After he whispers something in her ear, the young lady walks off uninterested as the rapper swivels his head to watch her strut away.

Undeterred, Drizzy hits the dance floor pushing up on a second female, who also blocks his advances. The scene cuts back to the pants-less cutie who is still sprawled out on her couch breathing into the phone, “Are you drunk right now?”

The answer is clearly yes: Drake’s drunken state is visually depicted by a spinning camera that moves in and out of focus as he makes his way across the dance floor to the bathroom where he continues to croon. The track then slows down to a crawl, repeating Drake’s refrain, “I’m just sayin’ you can do better.”

Maybe she can, but not tonight. The video snaps back, the song’s pitch is corrected, the video comes to a close, and Drake tells the woman on the phone, “You’re not gonna come? Guess I’m about to just kick it here then.” Cue the cold shower.

Lawyers Flee As Paul Ceglia’s Facebook Ownership Lawsuit Implodes

11:32 am in Uncategorized by Opal Ritter

zuckerberg

A few weeks ago, when we read Facebook’s response to the lawsuit in which upstate New York man Paul Ceglia claimed to own half the company, we decided that the lawsuit was bogus.

(Originally, we had been open-minded–because Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg had certainly done some dumb things back in his dorm room and because Ceglia’s story seemed so preposterous that it was hard to believe that it had been made up–because who would have believed it?)

But then Facebook opened up a can of legal whup-ass and nuked Ceglia’s claims and Ceglia himself.

After reading Facebook’s response, we also suggested that Ceglia’s high-powered law firm, DLA Piper–who gave Ceglia sudden credibility when they helped him refile his lawsuit several months ago–was probably wishing they had never heard of the man.

And it seems that was in fact the case.

Ceglia’s attorneys, DLA Piper former New York Attorney General Dennis Vacco, have cut their losses and walked away in shame.

And Ceglia now has a new attorney, a Jeffrey Lake of San Diego, who appears to be a sole practitioner.

Lake’s web site doesn’t say what sort of law he specializes in, and there’s no bio on the web site. A Google search suggests that Lake recently spoke to a San Diego group about medical marijuana. He appears to have represented a political candidate who claimed to be the victim of fraud but had his case dismissed because he never produced any evidence to support it. It’s also possible that he is the Jeffrey Lake mentioned on a couple of scam-protection sites like Ripoff Report in which people claim he took money to help with mortgage modifications and then the houses got foreclosed on. Or maybe he’s an amazing attorney who just likes to keep a low profile.

In any event…

paul-cegliaWe’re going to take the departure of DLA Piper and Mr. Vacco as confirmation that Ceglia’s lawsuit is a complete fabrication.

Because it’s not like this is a case in which there’s just no evidence to back up a claim.

In this case, there is oodles of purported evidence–documents, “emails,” everything.

And, still, the lawyers are running for the hills.

So that brings up another topic…

If Ceglia’s lawsuit is a fabrication based on fake documents and fake emails, Ceglia has now defrauded a New York court in addition to his attorneys and Facebook.

Last we checked, that was a crime.

And it’s a crime for good reason: If it wasn’t a crime to fabricate documents and try to shake down rich corporations and billionaires for hundreds of millions of dollars (or more), everyone would do it, every day, and our society would be even more buried in bogus litigation and shakedown settlement costs than we are now.

And this was a particularly high-profile attempt to shake down a major corporation and billionaire with apparently fabricated documents.

So are prosecutors going to be calling on Mr. Ceglia soon?

Resort Trend: Slip Into Pajamas

9:32 am in Uncategorized by Opal Ritter

Next time you wake up in yesterday’s clothes, at least they’ll be comfortable — assuming you’re wearing resort season’s pants, that is. Loose and breezy with forgiving waistbands (drawstrings and elastic — hellooo, breakfast buffet!), these are precisely the thing to wear when you’re headed to brunch but aren’t quite ready to bid farewell to your bed. While the silhouette might be tricky to pull off in floral patterns from head to toe, it works well with structured tops and adds a relaxed feel to collared button-downs.

Rachel Zoe Envisions Kate Middleton Wearing a Cinched Balloon in California

7:32 am in Uncategorized by Opal Ritter

WWD polled some California-centric brands, like O’Neill, and California-centric people, like Rachel Zoe, to ask them what the duke and duchess of Cambridge should wear and do when they land in California on July 8. Zoe submitted the sketch you see here, explaining:

“At first glance, this look appears to be a dress, but it is actually two pieces — a maxiskirt and white blouse tucked in…beyond! It’s glamorous, Boho and sexy without being too revealing. Perfect for a beach party in Malibu.”

But our favorite suggestion in this story that comes from Shamim Momin, curator of Los Angeles Nomadic Division, who says, “I like the weird things people don’t go to [like] the bat cave in ‘Batman’ [or] a hike in Malibu where they filmed ‘MASH’ and ‘Planet of the Apes.’” Just because WWD thought to include the curator of the Los Angeles Nomadic Division. Obviously!

2011 IFDA Competition, Part 1: Woojin Chung’s “Half Chair”

5:32 am in Uncategorized by Opal Ritter

0wjchunghc03.jpg

A violin seems like such an ergonomically-poor design, given that you’ve gotta cock your head to the side like that. But if you look at a cellist, you never see them slouch when they’re playing; they look like poster boys and girls for proper spinal alignment.

Designer Woojin Chung made the latter observation and designed a chair intended to promote good cellist-like posture. Chung’s “Half Chair” accomplishes this by removing material, providing a smaller ass-print in a bid to reduce slouching.

Keen On? Michael Fertik: Why People Will Pay for Privacy (TCTV)

1:32 am in Uncategorized by Opal Ritter

Will people pay for online privacy? Yes, they will ? at least according to Michael Fertik, the founder and CEO of Reputation.com, one of the early leaders in the new online privacy ecosystem. Indeed, Fertik believes that privacy is the next big thing in the online economy ? a necessary antidote to Reid Hoffman?s Web 3.0 economy of pervasive personal data. As Fertik told me when he came into San Francisco?s TechCrunchTV studio earlier this week, companies like Reputation.com give control back to the consumer in our Web 3.0 world. With products like the $75 a year MyPrivacy and MyReputation services, Reputation.com offers consumers a relatively affordable way to both block cookies and protect their online reputations in our increasingly public social media world.
